15K Training: Week 4

Ok, so you will notice that I skipped week 3.  My kiddo was on fall break last week so he was home with me and I couldn’t get out for a run at all.  I was bummed, but that’s the mom life for sure right?

This week hasn’t been the best when it comes to following my training plan.  I have had a headache from hell for almost a week now.  This happens about twice a year for me, but I do my best to power through.  I normally train on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.  This week I have stuck to that schedule so far, I just haven’t followed the plan for each of those days.

Tuesday I went out for what should have been an easy 30-45 min run.  I ended up doing more of a walk/run because my head was pounding.  I got 2 miles done.  But better than just sitting on the couch.

Wednesday I went out for a really long walk just to get my steps in and get some activity in.  I found an area that has longer stretch of flat road, so I’m going to try that this weekend during my long run.

img_3850Thursday should have been intervals of 3-5 intervals of 2 minutes fast followed by 1 minute slow.  I didn’t do that today either.  I went out for a 5k, I walked/ran the first half because of the stupid hills, but the last half I ran it all at a pretty quick pace, at least for me.  The final mile was 10:38 minutes.  It’s a personal best for me.  A year ago I was happy to be under a 13 minute mile, so this is pretty exciting.

img_3901-2I couldn’t run on Saturday because there was just too much going on with the kids sports, so Sunday was my long run, but I adjusted it a little.  I decided to ask my hubby and kiddo to go with me.  The kiddo rode his bike and my hubby ran.  I’m proud of him, he’s not a runner, he’s probably run once or twice in the last year, but he was running right along with me without needing to stop.  My pace is a little slow for his long legs, but still.

I ended up only running about a 5k with a couple times walking.  In the past, I’ve never had a problem with running a full 3 or even 4 miles, even further, but my pace has always been between 12:30-13:00 min per mile.  I can keep that pace going and not feel like I’m going to die.  But now I’m running between 10:30-11:30 min mile pace and I just can’t seem to keep that going long distance.  I can a little more than a mile and then feel like my breathing is so bad so I walk a little and then go again.  I’ve tried to slow my pace down to what it used to be, but that doesn’t feel natural now and it’s hard to go that slow.  I guess I need to do some research on how to build my stamina to keep going at that faster pace.  I’ve only got 7 weeks till my 15K and I want to run that whole thing, I don’t want to walk at all.  I will be doing some research today and adjusting my training this week a little so that I can work towards being able to run a full 5K at the faster pace.  I’m guessing I need to do more hill intervals probably.  ugg.  haha
